Laptop Bag

June 17th, 2010

For some people buying things is extremely easy. They just go, find something they like and they’re completely satisfied with their choice. Other people are generally confused on what to pick. Especially if they’re looking to buy something they’ve never bought before.

Laptop bags seem like one of the easiest things to buy. You just pick one you kind of like and you’re all set. The average person could afford thinking this way but a mobile professional will know better and understand how important it is to have a high quality bag for transporting a laptop.

laptop-bag

There are two things you need to keep in mind when choosing a laptop bag. First of all a laptop bag’s main point is to protect your laptop and any other gear/accessories you’ll be carrying in it. Secondly, you can buy a laptop bag that also compliments your personality and lifestyle, making traveling more convenient for you. There are different types of laptop bags designed specifically for this. People have different needs and obviously require different bags. You could say that buying a laptop bag is almost as important as buying a laptop. Because laptops are highly portable you’ll want to take them along with you at all times.

This means you’ll also be stuck with the bag you choose for quite some time. While price is an important part of buying anything, this is one area in which you really shouldn’t be cheap. Better materials can go quite a long way.

You can find top loading bags, backpacks, messenger bags, briefcase laptop bags, rollers as well as laptop bags designed specifically for ladies (which usually look just as good as a designer bag and sometimes you can’t even tell that they were made for your laptop).

laptop-bag-2

Before you start shopping be sure to determine what size of bag you need as well because your laptop will have to fit just right in it. On top of the laptop you’ll also have to figure out what accessories you’ll occasionally want to carry around with you. The more accessories you have the more pockets the bag needs to have. Most bags offer interior pockets and spaces for mobile phones and documents as well.

Laptop bags can be made out of many materials. The most common include Polyester, Cordura, Cotton, and leather. You can also find nylon, suede, vinyl, denim or micro fiber. Regardless of what you choose make sure the bag is water resistant. While a lighter bag is generally preferred, lighter bags tend to offer less protection than heavier bags (for example leather ones).

So this is one area in which going lighter may not be worth it. For younger people the choice is clear. Backpacks are probably the most convenient way to carry a laptop. Because you’re holding the laptop on your back, it’s much harder to hit or bump it into anything. Strapping a backpack on is also more comfortable than carrying a bag in your hand for half the day.

Sony VAIO Laptops

June 17th, 2010

While checking out the Sony Vaio laptops page a couple of days ago I noticed something very interesting. All of Sony’s Vaios are now very colorful and also somewhat cheaper than what Sony got its customers used to throughout the past few years. In a way you could say Sony adapted to the recession by lowering the prices a bit as well as offering a brighter and more optimistic world to its customers.

There’s no way around it, smaller and slimmer laptops are the current trend and that’s what today’s consumer is interested in. Aside from a select few that are interested in multimedia power horses and large screened desktop replacements, the average user will go right ahead and even choose a netbook if it comes in the right package (stylish design, good portability).

sony-viao-laptops

The CW series from Sony, composed of 14 inch laptops is also being offered in several thrilling colors out of which we can mention the high gloss Royal Indigo, Fiery Red, Icy White, Jet Black as well as two more interesting models, Crystal Rain white (with a pattern of rain drops) and Brilliant pink with a pattern of leaves/flowers. The last two cost an extra $30 to get but do stand out a bit in the crowd.

The colorful lid has a glossy finish. This means you should definitely buy a cleaning cloth to match your laptop unless you constantly want to show off your fingerprints to the world. Most of the CW’s interior is made out of matte materials, except for only one area, the wrist rest, which is glossy like the outer shell. Like most other Sony Vaio laptops the CW series is exceptionally well built and the materials used are high quality. If you’re the kind of user that wants to see and feel the money paid on a product, this laptop will most likely not disappoint in that area.

The Sony Vaio CW1S1E comes with the following specification sheet: Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 processor clocked at 2.13Ghz, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, Nvidia GeForce GT 230M graphics with 512MB of memory, 14 inch screen with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9, 320GB hard drive and a full set of ports including HDMI, ExpressCard/34, three USB or memory card slot.

sony-viao-laptops-2

The keyboard you’ll get to type on is, like in the case of most other Sony Vaio laptops, a chiclet type one. Because there’s a lot of space between the keys, each of them is clearly contoured so you won’t press the key right next to what you were meaning to press. Finally, the battery life isn’t bad at all, even though you may have expected three hours or under.

The Sony Vaio CW can spend a whole 5 hours and a bit away from the plug, in relatively intensive use. If you were considering a Macbook but hate the fact that you can only get it in white, or simply want to buy something that’s not branded Apple for a change, then the Sony Vaio CW might be an interesting product to consider.

Cheapest Laptop Computers

June 17th, 2010

It’s been settled, netbooks are the cheapest laptop computers you can find on the market. Usually, shrinking a lot of technology to make it fit in a tiny casing tends to cost a lot of money.

When the first tiny laptop hit the market (I specifically remember it was a sony vaio model), its price was outrageous simply because it offered more portability than any other laptop on the market. Despite their higher portability and compact size, netbooks remain affordable. You could even call them cheap. Netbooks may offer a lot of portability but their price recommends them for every kind of user with any kind of budget.

cheapest-laptop-computers

The reason for this is simple, they don’t offer high performance and are more of a pocket computer, which you can use to browse the internet or watch clips on youtube, than a full grown computer that can handle being a desktop replacement. Still, this doesn’t bother most users at all, because the majority of laptop consumers are looking for exactly this type of device.

Among the wide variety of netbooks that you can currently find on the market we’re here to mention the Samsung Go. While Samsung wasn’t very well known for manufacturing 15 inch laptops, the company is one of the leaders on the market when it comes to their netbook computers.

Their products are reliable, look good and aren’t very expensive either. The Samsung Go (the US version of the N310 that also includes a slightly better battery) comes with a design that’s different from whatever else you’ve seen on the market. Available in three colors, Jet Black, Orange and Blue, it dons a huge Samsung logo on the exterior case.

Some people may not be so bothered by this while others won’t understand why the company had to actually plaster their name all over this product. Designed by Japanese artist Naoto Fukasawa, the Samsung Go was actually inspired by the shape and curvature of a pebble. This is why it has rounded edges and doesn’t look as sharp and possibly modernistic as other netbooks.

cheapest-laptop-computers

The specifications of this netbook are quite common. You’ll get the same Intel Atom N270 processor running at 1.6Ghz, 1GB of RAM (expandable to 2GB), 160GB hard drive, 10.1 inch display with a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, intel GMA 950 onboard graphics, WiFi and Bluetooth. So in terms of performance you’re definitely not going to get anything out of the ordinary. The same rules apply, you’ll get a device that can be used to surf the net or watch some movies on, assuming you don’t mind the small screen. So, in the end, why would you choose the Samsung Go over other netbooks that are available?

On the bright side, its design is very attractive and a battery life of over 8 hours sounds pretty good. On the not so bright side the specifications are the same as in the case of a slightly older generation netbook. If you’re not necessarily looking for the cheapest laptop computers, waiting a bit until the new Intel Atom processors are out may net you a much better netbook for a hundred dollars more.

IBM Think Pad Laptops

June 17th, 2010

You might remember those IBM Think pad laptops you used to own, the ones that never broke down, always worked well and you simply loved to own. If you search for IBM now you’ll discover that they don’t sell the Thinkpad anymore. This is because Lenovo now sells the Thinkpad line.

In the end of 2004 towards the beginning of 2005, IBM sold therid PC group to lenovo. The two companies formed what they called ‘a complex joint venture’. The result of this was boosting Lenovo on the top 5 of laptop manufacturers. At the time being you’ll find the whole Thinkpad line (obviously upgraded) on Lenovo’s website and through the company’s shops as well as distributors.

ibm-think-pad-laptops

The Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15 is a good way of illustrating how the Thinkpad changed throughout the past few years (especially when it comes to the transition of the line from IBM to Lenovo). The Edge series is a sort of update to the classic design of the Thinkpad.

The new design, featuring rounded corners and a newly designed keyboard is meant to refresh the Thinkpads a bit and bring them up to date while maintaining that super usability and reliability. People are in love with the initial design of the Thinkpad so giving it a facelift while actually keeping most of its looks was a pretty hard thing to do. The exterior shell of the Thinkpad edge 15 is piano black but not shiny enough to cause problems with fingerprints and smudges. As mentioned before the keyboard also received an upgrade.

The keys are now of the chiclet type and provide much better spacing. The trackpoint is still there, found in the lower middle side of the keyboard, offering an alternative to input. Built quality of these laptop is however not great, and they seem to be more budget compared to the 13 and 14 inch versions from the same line. Somehow IBM think pad laptops seemed a bit more reliable.

ibm-think-pad-laptops-2

The specifications of this laptop depend on what configuration you’re choosing. For a configuration that retails at roughly $900 the hardware list will include the following : Intel Core i3 330M processor clocked at 2.13Ghz, 15.6 inch display with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, Intel GMA HD onboard graphics, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, 250GB hard drive and WiFi. Because it’s a slightly larger laptop, the Edge 15 has a full set of ports. On the sides you will find a memory card slot, three USB ports and a fourth that also doubles as an eSata, VGA, LAN, HDMI, audio jacks and an optical drive.

If you were wondering what happened to IBM Thinkpad laptops, now you know, they are currently sold by Lenovo. As for the Edge 15, it offers some changes from the initial Thinkpads (the most noticeable being the keyboard). It offers good performance but the build quality is somewhat under what the Thinkpad line accustomed its customers to.

Who Makes The Best Laptop

June 15th, 2010

Gaming laptops are slowly getting as good as gaming desktops. While they aren’t quite there yet you can find quite a few models that will let you play whatever game you fancy. Who makes the best laptop for gaming though? Alienware seems to be the best known manufacturer but is there any other brand that can compete? Sager is not as widely known as Alienware.

On top of that, Sager doesn’t really make its own laptops. Sager laptops are generally manufactured by Clevo who is a developer and manufacturer of notebook computers (especially barebone laptops). Sager doesn’t have an actual store, so you’ll only be able to find Sager laptops online through its own stores or the stores of its resellers.

who-makes-the-best-laptop

While people are more familiar with the M17x from Alienware, Sager’s NP9280 isn’t too far off in terms of performance. A brief comparison of the specification sheets of the two laptops will prove this. Since I wasn’t actually going to purchase any of the two for the time being, I could actually go wild with the configuration.

The top configuration of the M17x includes the following : Intel Core i7 920Xm processor at 2.0Ghz (3.2 Ghz Turbo mode, 8MB cache), CrossfireX 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5870 graphics, 8GB of DDR3 RAM at 1333 Mhz, 1.2TB storage space (2 x 640GB Raid 0), slot loading dual Layer blue ray burner, WiFi, ExpressCard Digital TV tuner with remote control and a 17 inch screen with a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. Other interesting features include : backlit keyboard that can light up in different colors for various areas, 5.1 surround Sound Audio, Bluetooth and an angry looking exterior perfect for a gamer.

All this you could get for about $4150. So what about the Sager NP9280 then, that was once presented as the highest performance desktop replacement on the market? Could it be Sager who makes the best laptops for gaming?

The best configuration we got from Sager is considerably more expensive, at $5360 (so a thousand and a bit more than the Alienware). But what it comes with seems a bit better too. The 17 inch 1920 x 1200 pixel full hd display seems great for graphics intensive games or even World of Warcraft if you care about high detail really bad and want to enjoy your raids to the maximum.

who-makes-the-best-laptop-2

Also included is an Intel Core i7 975 Quad processor (3.33 Ghz, 8MB cache), 12 GB of DDR3 RAM 1333Mhz (probably more than you might need), NVidia GTX 280M DDR3 1GB graphics, 2x Blueray super multi combo drives, 2 x 500GB hard drives Raid 0, WiFi and Creative X-Fi 7.1 Xtreme Audio Notebook Express Card sound. Unfortunately the Sager looks rather blank and doesn’t impress at all with its looks. While its performance is spot on, the Alienware M17x is much more like-able. Choosing between these two isn’t all that hard.

People looking for maximum performance, who want to keep their gaming laptop for two or three years from now might be more attracted to the Sager, while people who actually want to feel the trill their gaming notebook gives them, in terms of design and functionality as well will most likely opt for the Alienware.

Colored Apple Laptops

June 15th, 2010

There is absolutely no reason (no viable one anyway) why there aren’t any colored apple laptops. Dell has a multitude of colors; Sony just released their E series in colors that make you see their laptops from a mile away. Even the more conservative brands have at least the option of brown, red and blue.

In fact, Apple too sells colored products. Just think about their iPods. You could say Apple invented the colorful MP3 player. Their laptop customers, however, will have to each find their own way to customize their Apple laptops, make them more colorful or personalize them. Turning a white Apple laptop into a colorful and joyful one can be done in several ways. Some of the ways cost just a few tens of dollars whereas others could ruin your budget.

colored-apple-laptops

The first place to start if you want a colorful laptop is to look after laptop skins. There are quite a few advantages to this. You may want a pink laptop with a butterfly today, but tomorrow you may grow out of it. If you’ve already painted your laptop to look that way it will be quite hard to replace the pain job. With a laptop skin you simply get to peel it off and choose another.

Laptop skins offer infinite possibilities of how your laptop can look if you do a simple search on the Internet. They are pretty cheap and anyone can afford them. These smart vinyl stickers also protect your laptop’s casing from scratches and dirt. They come off with no trouble at all and don’t leave any sticky residue. Finally, some sites also let you customize your future laptop skin. You can simply send them your own photos and they can make a laptop skin out of them.

Another option you have if you really must have colored apple laptops is the company ColorWare which takes pride in giving a paintjob and makeover to any model of Apple laptop. You can either send them your newly acquired Macbook to get it painted or simply buy a new customized on e from them.

colored-apple-laptops-2<>/center
The price is rather steep compared to laptop skins and you’ll end up paying $450 for a paint job. While their work looks great there’s another thing you need to consider. Once you get your laptop painted you’d better be completely sure that’s the color you want because once it’s done you won’t be able to change it or repaint your device. Since the paint is applied directly on the laptop it may also scratch and deteriorate. In this case there’s not much you can do to make it look better, except for option 1, buy yourself a laptop skin.

Other ways of customizing your laptop include laptop bags and sleeves, and why not, even laptop plating. A company called Computer Choppers will allow you to plate your laptop in precious metal. If you think the whole laptop plated in gold is a bit too much then you could always be more discrete and choose to only plate the Apple logo out of precious stones such as diamonds, sapphires or any other gemstone that you like. Unfortunately this is a rather expensive way to customize since only the logo on your Macbook will set you back half a grand.

Sony Latest Laptops

June 14th, 2010

If the Sony latest laptops EA and EB come in bright colors, the EC Vaio is a bit more conservative and is only currently offered in gunmetal black. Measuring an impressive 17.3 this laptop is clearly the kind that you use as a desktop replacement. Sony designed it for the multimedia enthusiast and the large screen and keyboard are ideal for movies, some basic gaming or multitasking.

With a price starting at $819, there’s no doubt that this is probably one of the most affordable desktop replacements from Sony that was ever created. If you want a bit more power though, you can always configure this laptop to offer it.

The specification list can include an Intel Core i3 or i5 540M clocked at 2.53Ghz, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 500GB hard drive, 17.3 inch widescreen with a native resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 or 5650 graphics with up to 1GB of dedicated Video RAM, HDMI and VGA out, standard optical drive or Blue ray drive, Ethernet, WiFi, Express Card/34 slot, Memory Stick and SD card slot and a Motion Eye camera with microphone.

sony-latest-laptops

If gunmetal black isn’t exactly what you’re looking for and you’d love to have some color to bring a smile to your face, a good way to make the EC line from Sony more colorful is to add a keyboard skin that’s available in pink, purple, green or blue for an extra $20.

Island type keyboards could usually be found on netbooks because they offered a bit more space than the tiny casing could offer. You were still stuck with small keys but they seemed a bit more spaced out and comfortable to type on. The EC line from Sony also offers the same design for a keyboard. It even features a numerical pad that will allow you to input figures pretty fast.

A relatively smart WEB button will allow you to browse the net as soon as you feel like it without having to boot up the operating system. A Vaio button is also present and is meant to launch Media Gallery, which is a photo and music library software the laptop comes with by default (created by Sony). The third button, tagged Assist, will instantly launch troubleshooting and maintenance software to help you with any problems you may encounter with your laptop.

The area around the screen comes in a matte finish, which is great because it won’t become all greasy and filled with fingerprints. As any of the Sony latest laptops the build quality is great and the laptop gives an overall impression of robustness, even if it’s somewhat more affordable than other Sony products. Of course, the only thing the EC line is not so great at is battery life.

sony-latest-laptops-2

Desktop replacements with large screens definitely don’t offer anything above three hours of usage, but the under two hours the EC managed to score seems a bit bad. As a result, this laptop is definitely not built for being used away from a power source and you’ll mostly keep it unplugged for quick trips to the other room.

Sony Laptop Computers

June 14th, 2010

During the cold and white month of February Sony found it ideal to release a series of extremely colorful, flashy laptops from the EB line.

The whole Vaio E series is made out of entry-level slightly more affordable laptops. Not a lot of compromises have been made though and the performance is still worthy of Sony laptop computers. There’s no doubt about it, the first thing you will notice is the hypnotic glossy shell. The EB series Sony laptops are being offered in a multitude of colors.

sony-laptop-computers

The list includes : caribbean green, iridescent blue, coconut white, hibiscus pink and lava black. If you’re not a fan of glossy surfaces (because they tend to be a fingerprint magnet they tend to annoy some people) then you can also find the EB line in matte brown, white and silver.

If that wasn’t colorful enough for you, as an option you can also get colorful keyboard skins. If you want to attract attention like crazy you could always get a pink laptop with a blue keyboard skin. This could offend some people and make them look anyway to anything that soothes their eyes, but you’d have a pretty different and hip laptop.

The E series from Sony includes the EA lineup, consisting of 14 inch notebooks, the EC series made up of 17 inch desktop replacements and, of course, the EB series which are the middle of the road compromise at 15.5 inches. If the bright colors made you believe that these Sony laptop computers are more of a fashion statement than laptops that can handle most tasks, then you should really take a look at the specification list.

There are several configurations available but the lowest you’d get is an Intel Core i3 processor clocked at 2.26Ghz, 4GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, Windows 7 Home premium, DVD optical drive, Intel HD onboard graphics, 15.5 inch LCD screen with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and WiFi.

sony-laptop-computers

You can find the EB line from Sony starting at $799. This is as much as you would normally pay for Sony’s P series lifestyle PC which is in all reality a netbook. In fact, Sony has always amazed both with the technology used and the price they sold their products for, so it’s really nice to see that the manufacturer is also adapting to these somewhat rougher times, pricing and all.

So, who is this Sony laptop for? Most likely multimedia users who make beautiful things happen. The laptop is small enough to carry around with ease; its performance is good enough for photo and video editing; it’s also a bit more pricy than most laptops that offer this performance and size, but then again it offers Sony’s outstanding design and a whole series of bright colors that will make you smile every time you use it.

One thing it should have had, but people can handle not having, is a better battery life. Other than that, anyone who owns a pair of big headphones, an iPod and has an active and creative lifestyle will definitely love it.

Cheapest Laptop

June 14th, 2010

Price seems to be the most important detail for most consumers lately. It’s highly understandable too, since it’s very wise to cut some costs when you can. The most affordable type of laptop that most types of users can actually consider buying is the netbook. Netbooks have the advantage of being very small, portable and easy to use. What makes them so great also breaks them as the saying goes.

The small keyboard they have may be annoying for users with larger hands and the small screen doesn’t prove as convenient as a regular laptop one. Still, the fact remains, because of the lower price tags netbooks are the best selling laptops of the past few years. There are several models you can consider if you’re looking for the cheapest laptop you can find.

cheapest-laptop

The first choice is Acer’s very affordable and at the same time well built D250. Acer’s plan to keep prices low in order to attract more customers seems to really be working. While in Europe people are pretty familiar with the brand, in the USA Acer wasn’t that popular, but it’s slowly starting to be.

The D250 has an Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.6Ghz, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and 160GB hard drive. It costs a reasonable $298 and just barely manages to cross the $300 barrier. There is a single bad point when it comes to this netbook, and that is battery life. Most new generation mini laptops can achieve over 6 hours of battery life away from the plug whereas this Acer is pretty far from that point.

The Samsung Go is also a great netbook to consider. At around $350 it’s slightly more expensive than the Acer, with a specification sheet that’s identical and includes an Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. The single thing that may make it a better choice for some users is the stylish design.

The third netbook in this lineup is the Dell Inspiron Mini 10. As usual Dell actually lets you customize your laptop which is why the Inspiron Mini 10 has a price somewhere in between $350 and $550. The same Intel Atom processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and hard drive can be found in the Mini 10. Since the configuration is mostly the same for any netbook you can find under $500 the only thing that actually makes the difference is the brand and design.

cheapest-laptop

This is mostly what you’re paying for if you choose not to take the $298 Acer and go home with the nearly $400 Dell Inspiron Mini 10. While style may count a lot for some users, if you really want to buy the cheapest laptop it’s important to know that aside from looks and ergonomics these laptops really are the same and make use of the same generation of hardware.
